Karan Casey, the traditional folk singer, began her singing career fronting the American based folk group, Solas. She has since embarked on a very successful solo career and released three excellent albums.
Karan comes from the small town of Ballyduff Lower in Waterford. She sang with a choir when she was a teenager and also began to play the piano. She learned to sing in a traditional style from the Foran family in her native Waterford and they encouraged her to enter music competitions. Karan went on to studiy piano and voice at University College Dublin and the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
She began moonlighting in college, singing jazz standards with a duo in pubs around Dublin. She became fascinated with the vocal technique of Ella FitzGerald, Billie Holliday and Nina Simone and began to experiment with those styles when she sang traditional songs.
In 1993, she emigrated to New York to study at Brooklyn's Long Island University. She sang at a number of concerts with a New York-based folk group, Atlantic Bridge. Seamus Egan and Winnifred Horgan caught one of these concerts and asked Karan to join their new group, Solas.
Karan sang with Solas for four years in which the band would become one of the most distinguished folk bands in America. Karan decided to embark on her solo career and released her debut album Songlines in 1997. In 2001 she released the Winds Begins to Sings album. And she has just released her new album Distant Shore on Vertical Records produced by Donald Shaw of Capercaillie. The album features songs by Billy Bragg, John Spillane, Ger Wolfe Ewan McColl and Louis De Paor.
She will be joined on stage by Niall Vallely formerly of Nomos on concertina and whistle, Robbie Overson from Scullion on guitar and Paul Meehan from North Cregg on banjo and mandolin.
